We have been hearing "switch to IPv6" for 20 years. Besides having more addresses, is there a performance benefit? The short answer: Yes, mathematically.
1. The Cost of NAT
On IPv4, your router performs Network Address Translation (NAT) for every single packet. On IPv6, routing is direct. No header modification.
2. Simplified Routing Headers
IPv4 headers are variable in length with checksums. IPv6 headers are fixed length and do not have a checksum, allowing backbone routers to process packets in hardware much faster.
3. Why Isn't Everyone Using It?
Peering. Some smaller ISPs have poor IPv6 peering arrangements.
Verdict: If you are connecting to major services (YouTube, Netflix, Xbox Live), IPv6 is superior. Enable it on your router.
