Every network interface (Wi-Fi card, Ethernet port) has a unique 48-bit identifier called a Media Access Control (MAC) address.

IP vs MAC: The Postal Analogy

Think of an IP Address as your mailing address (it changes if you move). Think of a MAC Address as your Social Security Number (it stays with you forever).

The OUI (Manufacturer ID)

The first half of a MAC address identifies the company that made the chip (Apple, Intel, Samsung). The second half is a unique serial number for that specific device.
